What is Clinical Counselling?

Counselling is the provision of assistance and guidance in resolving personal, social, or psychological problems and difficulties. Professional counselling is a professional relationship that empowers diverse individuals, families, and groups to accomplish mental health, wellness,
education, and career goals.

Counsellors work with clients on strategies to overcome the obstacles and personal challenges that they are facing.

Why is Counseling Needed?

There are generally four reasons for people to visit Counselors:

1. Difficult Life Events

Some people seek counselling because they have experienced a stressful or traumatic life event, and speaking with a counsellor helps them process the situation. For example, people who are suffering from MVA accidents are facing traumatic events. After a motor vehicle accident, psychological assessment and counselling can give the support needed towards achieving mental wellness and regaining a sense of control in life. Dealing with the aftermath of a car accident can be challenging and confusing. Aside from dealing with any physical injuries, there may be other changes that can be noticed, such as:

  • Increase or decrease in appetite
  • Altered sleep routines
  • Altered mood state (e.g. feeling emotionally low, anxious, irritable, etc.)
  • Difficulty with concentration, focus and memory
  • Increase in stress

Following an accident, these experiences are normal. However, they may have a significant impact on mental health and the ability to achieve a quality of life.

How can counselling help? Through counselling, those people who are suffering from MVA accidents can gain support towards achieving mental wellness and regaining a sense of control in their life through:

  • Helping to identify the changes and challenges that are experiencing,
  • Advocating for identified needs,
  • Providing strategies to help positively manage the changes and challenges, and
  • Supporting their goals

2. Mental Health Issues

Many people who seek counselling have anxiety disorders, which cause excessive fear and worry. People with mood disorders, including depression and personality disorder, can also benefit from counselling. There are numerous other mental illnesses that counselling can be a helpful treatment option for.

3. Life Transitions And Decisions

People who are in periods of transition in their lives can benefit from counselling.

4. Self Discovery

Counselling is a good opportunity for people to reflect on their past experiences and explore their feelings and values. This can improve their sense of self and help them feel more complete and satisfied in their lives.
